Question: What happens if a tenant causes damage to a council property

Answer:

If you or anyone in your home cause damage to your home we expect you to arrange for it to be repaired. If we have to do the repair to make sure you and your family are safe you will have to pay us for the cost of the repair.

If you are reporting criminal damage caused by others, you should firstly contact Northamptonshire Police, by ringing 03000 111 222.

Then call the council on 0300 330 7000 and tell the customer services officer what has happened. We only carry out work to make your home safe. You must arrange all other repair work.

All repair work must be carried out by a qualified tradesperson. If you want us to do the work we will give you an estimated cost which will include an administration charge. You will have to pay us in full before the work starts. We are not responsible for repairing damage caused by a tenant or members of the household or invited guests.

As a tenant you are responsible for the cost of putting right the repairs that result from damage, misuse or negligence.

Claiming back the cost

You might be able to claim back the cost of rechargeable repairs through your personal Contents Insurance. It is up to you to check your policy details to see if you are covered for accidental damage.
